Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diet, and Paleo

It’s often times a diagnosis of cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS), or another disease which proves to be the pivot point for individuals to make significant changes to their eating and exercise habits. Whether the change stems from obvious reasons, like losing weight because obesity has been the causal agent for developing type 2 diabetes, or per the advice of their physicians to cut out gluten and dairy following an autoimmune diagnosis, these steps are reactive versus proactive. If we were to exercise daily and eat foods that set us up for health, rather than sickness in the first place,

Overcoming Rheumatoid Arthritis and Asthma with Paleo

Upon adopting a Paleo Diet I virtually eliminated my R.A. joint pain and swelling. My daughter overcame asthma. The Paleo Diet gave us our lives back.

Dietary Lectins in Rheumatoid Arthritis

Dr. Cordain, I have just recently read your article Modulation of immune function by dietary lectins in rheumatoid arthritis and find this is the best explanation of joint problems I’ve been having for the past two and a half years. The attacks I’ve had are of arthritic characteristics: red hot, swollen and very painful. The attacks are random and becoming more frequent to the point where I have been bedridden. Since reading your article, I have stopped eating grains and now find my joints are beginning to feel much better, so much so that I have stopped taking prescription anti-inflammatory drugs.

Can The Paleo Diet Treat Osteoarthritis?

Dear Prof. Cordain, I am an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee arthroplasty for the treatment of symptomatic osteoarthritis. I am currently coming to the end of a clinical fellowship in Toronto and will be returning to the UK to take up a post as a consultant (attending) in a NHS hospital and I would be grateful if you could give me any information on the use of Paleo diet and evolutionary fitness principles in the treatment of my patients. I first read about the Paleo diet on Art de Vaney’s website, then read Rob Wolff’s The Paleo Solution

Curing Rheumatoid Arthritis With The Paleo Diet

Below is a recent success story from a Paleo Diet fan:

Dr. Cordain,

Thank you for answering questions I’ve had for the past 15 years about why this diet makes my RA better. I just wish you could get the point across to all the rheumatologists out there!

I have had RA for 35 years…. first onset 1978 at age 37, finally diagnosed as adult onset Still’s Disease in 1983. My rheumatologist had me on just about every high powered RA drug available for the next 20 years. I was truly blessed by having side-effects to most of them…

Success Story: Healing Psoriatic Arthritis With The Paleo Diet

I posted this at marksdailyapple.com and wanted to say thanks as you are the person that started this. I moved from Houston to Denver a couple of months ago so if you ever want to go out for a lunch or something let me know.

Anyone interested in something like this or someone doing studies might find this interesting. At 27 I was diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis and was bad enough for me to take Enbrel. C-reactive protein was around 8 and I had pain in my upper back, knuckles on rt hand and wrist, rt knee, rt foot, and was starting to get at my shoulders as well. Enbrel did an excellent job and I was back to 100% in 3 days….I cried when the pain went away.

This worked great for over 3 years and then I started to read about what I was injecting into my body…

Arthritis & Joint Pain Success Stories!

The following are some of the many unsolicited reports that have come in … Testimonials for arthritis and joint paint relief “No more aching joints…” “…This is my first week on the Paleo Diet and I am already experiencing clear headedness, looser joints and no aching anymore. Wow! I have for years read and thought about this concept but was hooked on macrobiotics which truthfully is about caring for oneself at the highest level. And it’s about living seasonally and climactically. The Paleo does this quite nicely. Anyway thanks for the heads up in the form of your book. I

Rheumatoid Arthritis and The Paleo Diet

Hello, The article, “Modulation of immune function by dietary lectins in rheumatoid arthritis” is of interest to me, but is 10 years old. Can you suggest any more recent scientifically valid articles on the same topic? Many thanks, Allena Maelán Fontes’ Response: Hi Allena, To my knowledge, there are no reviews or studies addressing the role of a paleolithic diet and it’s implications in rheumatoid arthritis, except from that of Dr. Cordain. In his MS (Multiple Sclerosis) DVD Dr. Cordain thoroughly explains the dietary mechanisms of autoimmunity in MS, which are almost the same for all autoimmune diseases–including RA. Those

Can Omega-3 Fatty Acids Help with Obesity and Metabolic Disorders?

Fish oil supplements remain one of the most popular ways to help maintain good health.[1] For years, the buzz has been that omega-3 fatty acids can help with a wide variety of conditions, ranging from preventing cognitive decline, to aiding with fat loss, and even to helping with brain and eye development.[2] And that’s just a few. There are a wide variety of other benefits to omega-3 fatty acids including good skin, aiding with sleep, and even helping with arthritis.[3]   What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?
