Not everyone likes drinking plain water. Some prefer to hydrate with teas, sodas, juices, or even sugary water-flavor enhancers that have no nutritional value. And we get it. Water isn’t for everyone. But you don’t have to resort to drinking unhealthy options (or an excess of coffee and tea) to reach your H2O goals. That’s where infused water comes in.

The beauty of infused water is that you can use almost any fruit you have on hand, especially extra fruits or herbs that may go bad. Berries and melons work well because they serve many, so you can divide some into a pitcher to infuse and save the rest for enjoying as-is or in another recipe. Infused water is also a sustainable way to get the most out of citrus rinds after juicing—just make sure they’ve been washed beforehand.

Infused water will last up to four days in the refrigerator—and you don’t have to throw out the fruit when you’re done. Snack on it from the pitcher or throw it into a smoothie; just know that the flavor won’t be as strong as eating it fresh. We reccomend using this large glass pitcher to help keep your Infused Water recipe fresh and flavorful for up to one week.

Our recipe is for strawberry-mint-lime infused water to get you started, but feel free to mix and match with any of the fruits, herbs, and citruses below to find your favorite flavor combination. Remember that cut fruits (especially berries) will infuse more flavor into the water than whole:

  • Sliced cucumber and lemon juice or rinds (the classic infused water recipe)
  • Blackberries and sage leaves
  • Watermelon cubes, basil leaves, and lemon juice or rinds (a milder take on our lemonade recipe
  • Cinnamon sticks and pear slices
  • Honeydew cubes and mint leaves
  • Grapefruit juice or rinds, mint leaves, and lime juice or rinds
  • Sliced mango and ginger
