Strawberries and peaches are some of the most popular summer fruits out there—and they make for a tasty smoothie combination, too. Blended with several phytoestrogen-rich ingredients, this Strawberry-Peach Smoothie will pack a nutritious punch for your mornings.

Phytoestrogens are chemical compounds found in plants that mimic hormonal estrogen in humans. For women, these nutrients have potential to protect against a variety of conditions,  including menopausal hot flashes, osteoporosis, menstrual irregularities, acne, and certain types of cancers. Men can benefit as well, with sufficient estrogen levels supporting bone health and mood regulation.

Soy and other legumes are known to be high in phytoestrogens, however they are not considered part of a Paleo diet. But you can still increase your intake of phytoestrogens with other plant-based sources. Flaxseeds have the greatest concentration of phytoestrogens due to their high amount of lignans, a nutrient which also has antioxidant properties. Cashews are rich in lignans as well, so we’ve thinned out the consistency of this drink with cashew milk. (Not sure where to buy cashew milk? Try making some yourself by substituting cashews for almonds in our Homemade Almond Milk recipe.)

Though not a phytoestrogen powerhouse like flaxseed, peaches are the flavorful star of this Strawberry-Peach Smoothie. They contain several vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (including some lignans) that support digestion and skin health. Just be sure to choose fresh over canned whenever possible—that’s where the concentration of nutrients is the highest.

TIP: For those on an autoimmune protocol diet, nuts and seeds should not be consumed. Removing the cashew milk and flaxseed will reduce the amount of phytoestrogens in your smoothie, but you will still get some lignans from the strawberries and kale.
