Crohn’s Disease and The Paleo Diet

Indeed, inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn’s Disease) patients usually do very well with The Paleo Diet, as nutrients are one of the main environmental triggers of this condition. Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease where the immune system mounts an attack against its own tissues – in this case the cells lining the intestine.

For an autoimmune disease to occur we need a genetic predisposition and an environmental trigger. The genetic predisposition depends on genes coding for the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system. One of the environmental triggers may be nutrition, besides infections, geography (vitamin D deficiency), physical trauma or vaccination.

Gout and The Paleo Diet

A disease that frequently occurs in patients with the metabolic syndrome is gout. Consequently it is sometimes considered to be a disease of insulin resistance that is part of the metabolic syndrome. In this issue I will show you why gout often occurs simultaneously with the classic diseases of insulin resistance. More importantly, I will show you how and why current dietary recommendations to treat gout are largely ineffective and that a better nutritional strategy exists to ameliorate or prevent disease symptoms. This dietary strategy is supported not only by recent empirical data, but also by a long trail of evolutionary and genetic evidence which demonstrates how our genome has effectively skirted gout via certain mutations in the face of a high meat diet.

Greater Vitality in Later Life | The Paleo Diet

Greater Vitality in Later Life

Overweight and obesity are linked to an array of health problems known as metabolic syndrome, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and blood fat levels, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease – which often all get worse as we age. Linked to 400,000 deaths annually, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.

Several aspects of the Paleo Diet make it easy to maintain optimum weight. By emphasizing low glycemic load foods and avoiding high fructose foods, the Paleo Diet helps to keep energy levels balanced so you don’t experience an energy crash. This not only makes it easier to avoid eating unhealthy foods, but it also increases stamina and improves mental focus.

* There are no guarantees that every person following The Paleo Diet will lose weight or gain fitness. Weight loss and fitness depend on many factors and the results may vary from person to person.
