November Series: Ketogenic Diets

If you’re part of the Paleo world long enough, it’s nearly impossible to avoid hearing terms like ketosis, ketones, and ketogenic being tossed around. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find out these terms frequently revolve around diets that are very high in fat and low in carbohydrates. A concept that has been part of the mainstream conscious since Dr Atkin’s New Diet Revolution gained mass popularity around the turn of the Century.

But the Atkins diet is just one form of low-carbohydrate diet. When a diet drops below 100g of carbohydrates per day and particularly below 50g per day, the body starts producing ketones1. Hence these diets are often referred to as ketogenic diets.

It’s not uncommon for people to confuse the Paleo diet with a ketogenic diet, believing they are the same thing. The short answer is they are not.

That’s not the important question however, The questions that we need to ask are whether the two diets are compatible, and more importantly, does the Paleo world want to be associated with the ketogenic approach at all?

In this series on ketogenic diets, our writers delve into exactly what a ketogenic diet is, if it’s healthy and whether it’s possible to make a Paleo diet “ketogenic” in nature. We’ll also address some emerging research on the potential health benefits of a ketogenic diet for both longevity and cancer treatment.
