Triathlete Tries Paleo | The Paleo Diet

Dr. Cordain,

How does a person write a letter to tell someone THANK YOU for changing their life? Well, I am going to try my best! A little background, I am a female athlete and have been competing my entire life in a variety of sports, but about 2 years ago I did my first triathlon and was hooked. I was, what I thought at the time, always being updated on all the correct nutrition to give my body the best chance. However, I didn’t feel the best and I always felt that I was missing something when it came to my food choices. But how? I have followed what our “experts” from our own government and other sport nutritionists had been telling me my entire life. There is so much crap out there about your body and nutrition and I never fell for it but I could never find the answers I was looking for until I was introduced to your book The Paleo Diet for Athletes.

I have to be honest, when I first heard about it I didn’t believe a word of it, especially when it came to athletes, but sometimes during a negative time in your life something positive can come out of it. December 1st 2005, I had major shoulder surgery (due to an accident on the bike during a tri). At the time I was riding the best I ever had. Now I thought, what am I going to do being laid up for months, trying to recover the best I can and not get so out of shape. Well I did some research about the ideas presented in your book, liked what I read, and thought o.k., even though it goes against everything I have ever been taught, I am going to give it a try. I had to ask myself, “Can I can survive and enjoy my food on the Paleo Diet?” Well I am always up for a challenge so off I went. And the results were amazing!

I lost 13 pounds and I wasn’t even trying to lose weight! My body looks the leanest and healthiest of my entire life. Three months after surgery I ran a half-marathon and had a personal best by 10 minutes! The most important thing is how I feel on the inside. I feel great both mentally and physically. Plain and simple my body feels amazing. My friends, colleagues and people that I just meet compliment me. Every day of my life people ask me questions and want to know what I do. On a daily basis I talk about this lifestyle. I feel like I am your spokesperson of central Florida (but don’t worry I won’t charge you any money). I wish it was called The Paleo Lifestyle because that is what it is!

Thank you so much!!! It feels so good to have the right information about putting the correct foods into my body. You completely changed my life and I will always be grateful. Thank you for going out there and finding the correct information and sharing it. It means the world to me. As I cross every finish line achieving my goals, a thank you to you will always be there waiting.
